Hormone Therapy In the News

Hormone therapy today.

In 2004, to help ease the concerns of women and healthcare professionals, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) issued the following guidelines:

  • Estrogen is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.
  • Hormone therapy also effectively protects bones from osteoporosis and fractures of the hip and spine.
  • Women using any hormone therapy should take the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time and annually review their need for hormone therapy with their healthcare professionals.
  • Combined hormone therapy and estrogen-only therapy should not be used for prevention of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, due to the small but significant increased risk of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke and blood clots.

It is important for every woman to understand the benefits and risks of all of her treatment options. Talk with your healthcare professional about your medical history and your current lifestyle to determine whether hormone therapy is right for you.
