The Difference Is drsp®

What is drsp?

All combination hormone therapies (HTs) contain an estrogen and a progestin. Estrogen is used to help relieve menopausal symptoms, like hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. However, in women with a uterus, estrogen alone can increase the risk of uterine cancer. The progestin in a combination HT helps reduce that risk.

The progestin in ANGELIQ® tablets (drospirenone/estradiol), is different from the progestin found in other HTs. It’s called drsp or drospirenone (pronounced dros-peer-eh-known).

While many synthetic progestins are made from the male hormone, testosterone, drsp is derived from spironolactone. Unlike the progestins found in other HTs, spironolactone most closely resembles and acts like the hormone progesterone made by your body.

In fact, drsp is the most preferred progestin of OB/GYNs.* Ask your healthcare professional about the unique properties of drsp and what they may mean for you.

* In a survey of OB/GYNs, drsp was the preferred progestin in oral contraceptive use.
